Manchester United are planning talks over a new contract for left-back Luke Shaw at the start of 2027, sources have told Football Insider.
The 31-year-old is out of contract at Old Trafford next summer, but the club are keen to address that in the coming months.
In what will be seen by many as an unexpected twist, United still see a role for the defender long-term, and are preparing to also take his needs into account when discussing a new deal.
United are also working to add competition for the veteran, after failing to bring in a new left-back during the summer transfer window.
Shaw is now into his 13th season with United, and currently holds the record as the longest-serving player in the senior squad.
The defender also managed to stay largely injury free last season, and is still seen as a key cog under Michael Carrick.

Shaw susceptibility to injuries throughout his career has made it difficult for him to make an impact at United at times.
However, there is now a genuine hope behind the scenes that the worst of his fitness issues may now be behind him.
That is largely proven by the fact that the former Southampton man managed to play in every single Premier League game throughout last season.
Shaw achieved that feat for the first time in his entire career, although United are keen to ensure that they have greater cover for him long-term.
They still view him as their starting left-back, and intend to tie him down to a new contract as quickly as possible.
If the contract situation cannot be sorted within the next few months, then they will potentially face the prospect of losing him for free, and that is not an option that the club are willing to consider.

The 33-year-old has caught attention at Old Trafford due to the high-energy and high-pressing style that he has implemented at Brighton.
Hurzeler has won plenty of plaudits for his style of football, but his abrasive personality provides some element of concern for the United hierarchy.
The Red Devils have no plans to sack Carrick at the moment, but they remain on the lookout for a potential successor, whenever that may be needed.
