Contrary to viral reports that Alaba International Market had been razed by fire, the Lagos State Police Command has stated that the shanties around the market were set ablaze by police officers attached to Ojo Division.
It was gathered that after raiding the vicinity, arresting suspects, and recovering arms and ammunition, policemen attached to Ojo Division set fire to the shanties.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, who debunked the false narrative of a fire outbreak, clarified the situation, saying, “This is a false narrative! Acting on credible information, police officers from Ojo Division raided shanties around the market, arrested suspected criminals, and recovered some weapons. The shanties were thereafter set on fire.”
Furthermore, Hundeyin emphasized that the Alaba International Market was not affected by the fire, contrary to the rumors spreading on social media.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident and stated that efforts were underway to extinguish the inferno.
Adeseye also disclosed that fire crews from Ojo, Sari-Iganmu, and Ajegunle were being turned away by angry mobs from performing their statutory duties. However, they are presently on standby to assist as soon as the situation becomes conducive.
The agency is currently collaborating with security agents to address the situation, and they have assured the public that the situation is under control.
It is essential to note that spreading false information on social media platforms can be detrimental, and the public is advised to verify information before sharing it. Also, the police and other security agencies are continuously working to ensure the safety and security of residents in the state.
