Residents of Onukewube Road in Adabebe community, Amawbia town in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra have raised the alarm over 450 buildings currently on the verge of collapse following weeks of heavy flood disaster that has continued to threaten the area since the beginning of this year’s rains.
The people bitterly complained that their buildings have always been submerged by flood when it rains, and the ugly situation is currently creating deep gullies from Union area and Kabe Colleges up to the boundaries of the town with Nise Community.
Checks show that initial efforts at checking the flood were carried out by the Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Nze Pius Okoye, who constructed drainage and tarred part of the road from Kabe junction, Amawbia, up to 12 kilometers.

But with the recent change of the Commissioner for Works with a new Commissioner, following the cabinet reshuffle in the state, it has been difficult for the project to continue.
The residents of the area, on Saturday’s state-wide environmental sanitation exercise, embarked on the construction of drainage and clearing of bushes through direct Labor as a palliative to the challenges.
A resolution signed by Chairman Adabebe Neighborhood Association (ANA), led by Mr Collins Obidi and the Publicity Secretary, Mr Okey Maduforo, the body said.
They said, “We wish to thank Mr Governor Prof Charles Soludo for his massive road construction across Anambra state as well as his efforts in ensuring security of lives and property”
“We as a body however wish to lament the threat of flood disaster in our area which occurs at every rainy season and as we speak over 450 buildings are at the mercy of flood erosion in our area”
“We have commenced the construction of concrete drains to direct and control the flow of flood in the area in compliance to the directive of the Anambra state government efforts at fighting Environmental degradation but we cannot do it alone “
“Adabebe village has two schools , Union Secondly School which is a pubic school as well as Kabe primary and secondary school as well as a private hospital in the area which may become victims of flood disaster”
The group stated that with the construction of the road up to the Nise community, the area would be saved from the looming disaster.
They added that a bridge had already been constructed linking the area to the Nise community.
