Kiros is a 29-year-old lawyer who immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia as an infant, and she built her campaign around calls for generational change and more aggressive progressive policies. She is backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, the Democratic Socialists of America, and Justice Democrats, and she argued that Democrats need to move with greater urgency to counter President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Although DeGette has long been considered one of the more progressive members of Congress by supporting policies like Medicare for All, she was unable to overcome growing dissatisfaction among voters looking for new leadership. Kiros is now heavily favored to win the general election in the safely Democratic district.
