Garo’s choice as Kano deputy governor merit-based, says gov

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has disclosed that the nomination and confirmation of Sule Garo as deputy governor was based on his competence and commitment to the development of the state.

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Yusuf made the disclosure while opening the 39th Executive Council Meeting held at Government House, Kano, on Tuesday.

“We tried as much as possible to select someone who can provide matching contributions toward the development of the state,” the governor was quoted as saying.

Recall that last week, the governor transmitted Garo’s name to the state House of Assembly for screening following the resignation of the former deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo.

The governor said, “So many names of people were presented, but we had to look into their past performances, their competency, and what they had contributed to the state.

“Murtala Sule Garo is a seasoned politician who can make his own contribution.”

Yusuf commended the state House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Jibril Falgore, for the speedy confirmation of the nominee.

He said the newly confirmed deputy governor would be sworn in soon and called for support to enable him to discharge his duties effectively.

He also congratulated the newly appointed Head of Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, noting that her contributions while serving as director and permanent secretary were significant.

The governor urged stakeholders and civil servants to support her to ensure success in her new role.

During the council meeting, the governor was presented with 39 outstanding excellence awards from various organisations within and outside the state, in recognition of his administration’s achievements.

One of the awards included a cash gift of N30,000 from a primary school teacher, in appreciation of the governor’s performance in the education sector.
