Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s latest position on the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), describing it as a reflection of deep-rooted leadership challenges.
Obi noted that Nigeria remains among the most affected countries by terrorism globally, citing a sharp rise in terror-related deaths in recent data.
According to the GTI report, Nigeria recorded the highest increase in terrorism-related fatalities in 2025, with deaths rising by 46 per cent, from 513 in 2024 to 750.
The country now ranks fourth globally, behind Pakistan, Burkina Faso, and the Republic of Niger.
Reacting via a statement shared on his social media platform, Obi said the trend highlights the consequences of weak governance and poor prioritisation of national security.
He argued that while several countries are making progress in reducing terrorism, Nigeria appears to be regressing due to systemic failures.
The former Anambra State governor attributed the situation to factors such as corruption, weak institutions, lack of adherence to the rule of law, and the neglect of security responsibilities by those in power.
Obi further lamented the persistent threats posed by insurgent groups, kidnappers, and armed bandits, noting that violence continues to claim lives across the country, particularly in vulnerable communities.
He questioned the effectiveness of governance in the face of ongoing insecurity, stressing that the protection of lives remains the most fundamental responsibility of any government.
Calling for urgent reforms, Obi urged authorities to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive steps toward improving national security and restoring public confidence.
He maintained that a safe and secure Nigeria is a fundamental right of every citizen and must be treated as a top priority.
