A tragic road accident at New Castle Bus Stop along the Oworonsoki–Apapa Expressway in Gbagada, Lagos, has claimed the life of a female passenger and left six others seriously injured. The incident occurred when a Volkswagen commercial bus lost control and crashed into a roadside culvert, causing several passengers to be violently thrown about inside and outside the vehicle.
In the chaos that followed, one female passenger was ejected onto the expressway. An approaching articulated trailer could not stop in time and ran over her, resulting in her death at the scene. Six other occupants of the bus, including the driver, sustained severe injuries and multiple fractures.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly responded by cordoning off the area and activating emergency traffic control to prevent further accidents. Personnel from the Pedro Police Division provided security, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The remains of the deceased passenger were later removed by the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit. After clearing the wreckage and debris, LASTMA restored normal traffic flow along the expressway, while the agency’s management expressed condolences to the victim’s family and urged motorists to prioritize proper vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable accidents.
