Frozen salmon sold at wholesaler in seven states recalled over possible listeria contamination

Frozen salmon sold at a popular wholesaler in seven states has been recalled over possible listeria contamination.

Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club stores was recalled after Listeria monocytogenes was found in a sample collected randomly by the Food and Drug Administration, according to a Wednesday announcement from seafood company Slade Gorton & Co., Inc.

It’s unclear how the sample was contaminated. The company said it is investigating the matter and “taking steps to keep it from happening again”, according to the FDA.

Listeria are bacteria that contaminates many foods and can make people sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that Listeria infection is “rare, but serious.”

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the company recall announcement warned.

Newborns, adults aged 65 or older and people with weakened immune systems are also at a heightened risk of harm if infected with Listeria, according to the CDC.

Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. said no illnesses have been reported as of Wednesday, but to visit your doctor if you develop symptoms of Listeria infection.
