Peter Wright has opened up on his respectful embrace with Luke Humphries after his upset win.
Wright took on world No.1 Humphries as a significant underdog at the PDC World Championship, and needed to call on his previous experience as a former two-time champion to dethrone the current king.
But incredibly ‘Snake Bite’ did exactly that, ousting the leading player 4-1 in a showing of oche brilliance and charisma.
The seismic upset shook the darting world and the crowd at Ally Pally, who were forced to scratch their eyes during the raptures of celebrations.
Both players had spoken of their own ambitions of winning the tournament before hand, with Wright suggesting he had the tools to beat Humphries.
‘Cool Hand’ had responded by suggesting his legacy in the sport was closing in on Wright’s despite their difference in playing time.
Despite the verbal jabs, the pair shared a respectful and emotional embrace after the shock proceedings unfolded.
Wright has since opened up on what was said during an interview with talkSPORT.
He said: “Yeah he was just saying that the media get carried away with silly comments.
“He said that he didn’t say the things that it actually came across like.
“I said Luke exactly the same, that is just the way it goes some time. He wished me all the best.
“He’s a lovely guy, a real family guy and I wish him all the best moving forward.
“He’s been a fantastic world champion, he’s done everything for the PDC and for the sport.
“He goes all around the world doing interviews and stuff like Luke Littler has.
“They’ve been spreading the game fantastically.”
It was an incredible display from Wright who has had a torrid year on the tour, and largely unable to replicate his best.
But incredibly he finds himself in the quarter finals of the tournament against all odds, in a draw that has now opened up to new scales.
A victory in his next match could set up a huge showdown with Luke Littler in the semi-final, if the ‘The Nuke’ is able to win his next two matches.
The Scotsman himself appears to be a real contender to go all the way now.
But he insists he isn’t one of the favourites to win the tournament, given his previous form and plans to take it day by day.
He added: “Yeah it would be a dream to win three world titles to match Michael Van Gerwen.
“I’d beat Jockey Wilson and Gary Anderson before they get it, but there is a way to go yet.
“I’m not a favourite. That is ridiculous. There is a long way to go yet.
“I make Callan Rydz favourite, he is the one playing fantastic darts.
“He’s the man to watch not me.”
