The two smart reasons why Unai Emery rejected Bayern Munich

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is one of the most respected names in world football right now, which is a huge departure from the largely unfair derision he received during his tenure as Arsenal manager.

Now, nobody is laughing at the master of the Europa League, because, soon, he will be back in the Champions League, with Aston Villa currently in command of fourth place.

Emery has become one of the most coveted managers among the elite clubs, but with Aston Villa on the cusp of the Champions League, the Lions are already in the upper echelon themselves under the Spanish manager.

Bayern Munich are after a top manager with Thomas Tuchel set to leave the club at the end of the season. Unai Emery already signed an extension with Aston Villa to take himself off the open market, but, before that, Bayern were eyeing the ex-Villarreal coach.

Per a report from The Athletic, Unai Emery had two wise reasons for rejecting the approaches from Bayern Munich earlier in the managerial search and instead reaffirming his commitment to the Aston Villa project.

Emery had reservations about the amount of power Bayern Munich executives have over transfer decisions and other personnel decisions, leaving managers with comparatively little power.

That is the German model, of course, but it is taken to an extreme at Bayern, to the point where it did alienate Hansi Flick, leading to his departure.

The Athletic’s reported second concern of Emery’s is the public criticism Bayern Munich executives make of their managers, as Uli Hoeneß and others working for the club are big celebrities in Germany with platforms and the green light to make harsh public criticism of the coach.

Everyone, even legendary managers, have fallen victim to this in Bavaria. Thomas Tuchel has recently felt the wrath of “Uli”, who doubled down on his criticism of Tuchel. It is understandable for Emery not to want to deal with that. He has it made with Aston Villa.
