Enzo Maresca informed Chelsea, twice in late October and again in mid-December, that he was in talks with people connected to Manchester City about his candidacy for the managerial role should a future vacancy arise, according to The Athletic.

This disclosure was not optional. Maresca was contractually obliged to inform Chelsea of any contact with another club.

But let’s be honest — this changes everything.

If Maresca was speaking to City-linked figures, then how committed was he really to the Chelsea project?

This wasn’t idle speculation.
This was positioning.

It suggests Maresca always had one eye elsewhere — and that his eventual exit may not have been emotional or impulsive, but strategic.

When you connect the dots — the growing frustration, the public distancing, the sudden breakdown in relationships — it starts to look less like chaos and more like calculation.

Maybe Maresca didn’t just lose the Chelsea job.
Maybe he freed himself.

Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: this wasn’t as simple as Chelsea “pulling the plug.”

  1. I remember Fergie recommending the Everton coach to take the role after him, united has never been the same again. Good riddance

  2. That must be Ornstein saving the Bonnie BlueCo tw@’s collective arses!

  3. Means he intentionally created messed the last 2 games? Then play victim?

  4. I love your write ups!

    Keep it up man.

  5. If as explained herein, then it was a Janus approach and the sooner he severed relationship, the better for Chelsea.

  6. Chelsea is now like an auditioning job.

  7. A coach knows how to select a team that will loose a match and speed up his exit. It’s obvious in recent results.

  8. Whoever Chelsea hierarchy employ today with same conditions as Enzo Maresca will in the next available opportunity listen to available offers.

  9. So Maresca acted honestly telling the club in October of ManC’s interest? If this requirement was in his contract, then surely the club knew from the start that he could be tempted elsewhere.
His exit could be calculated but doesn’t exclude the club managing the situation to make Maresca’s life difficult as a form of constructive dismissal.
No-one comes out of this smelling of roses. Maybe the owners forced him out as much as Maresca wanting to leave.
