The reasons why the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) picked Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles have been revealed.
NFF technical committee member, Victor Ikpeba, opened up on Finidi’s appointment on Monday Night Football.
Finidi’s appointment was confirmed by the NFF on Monday.
Ikpeba, who was Finidi’s teammate in their playing days in the Super Eagles, stated that the NFF settled for Finidi because of their financial constraints.
“Firstly, I want to congratulate Finidi George on his appointment as the Super Eagles coach. However, it was a difficult task because we (technical committee) initially wanted a foreign manager,” Ikpeba said.
“However, we settled for Finidi because of the finance. It’s not like we don’t have confidence in our own coaches back home. We thought there should be continuity in the way Peseiro took the team to the final of the 2023 AFCON. So, eventually, we were guided by the NFF President to look inward.”
Finidi’s first official game will be Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana of South Africa in June.
