1. The report of the special investigation into the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has accused the immediate past governor of the apex bank, Godwin Emefiele, of using ill-gotten wealth to acquire banks for himself through proxies. According to the report, Emefiele used proxies to acquire Union Bank of Nigeria for Titan Trust Bank Limited, as well as Keystone Bank without any evidence of payment.

2. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has changed its stance on crypto assets in the country and asked banks to disregard its earlier ban on crypto transactions. This is according to a circular dated December 22, 2023, with reference number FPR/DIR/PUB/CIR/002/003, and signed by the apex bank’s Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Haruna Mustafa.

3. The Department of State Services has called on all operators of recreation and worship centres to be vigilant during the yuletide season. The service equally urged the citizens to be security conscious and pay attention to their environment.

4. Kano State Police Command has rearrested a suspected criminal ring leader, Bahago Afa, who was said to have repented recently, alongside six others for armed robbery. The command added that its men neutralised several networks of criminals that have turned the state into a hub of thuggery, armed robbery, and other criminal activities.

5. The bodies of two middle-aged adults (male and female) and a 12-year-old boy were recovered on Friday when a two-storey building collapsed in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State. The Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the figure to journalists after the third body was recovered from the rubble of the collapsed building situated along Herbert Macaulay Way.

6. The Enugu State Police Command has arrested one Chukwuebuka Igwebuike for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting traders with fake naira notes in the Afor Market area of the Garki Awkunanaw area of the state. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

7. President Bola Tinubu has promised to always be fair to all Nigerians, as he restated that his administration remains committed to advancing the unity of the country, as well as ensuring the welfare and prosperity of all citizens. Speaking at the Ansar-Ud-Deen Central Mosque in Surulere, Lagos State on Friday, the President said the economic reforms initiated by his government were aimed at establishing a robust and secure foundation for Nigerians today and for generations unborn.

8. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Saturday, February 3, 2024, as the date for the conduct of bye-elections and rerun elections into existing vacancies in both the state and National Assembly. While the bye-elections will be conducted in two senatorial districts, four federal constituencies, and three state constituencies, the rerun election is expected to take place in 35 constituencies across the country.

9. The crisis between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike may not be over after all. Some residents of the state on Friday stormed the Government House, Port Harcourt, to protest the Monday Peace Accord signed in Abuja by the governor and the minister.

10. The state capital and communities of Borno and Yobe have been thrown into darkness after suspected Boko Haram insurgents destroyed an electricity tower supplying power to the city. The latest setback comes barely a year after the insurgents destroyed towers that cut off Maiduguri from the national grid for several months.
