Transfer Rumors: Newcastle willing to sell a key player at the right time

Newcastle United will be thinking about which players they can sign in the January 2024 transfer window in order to get back into the top seven of the Premier League, provided they can navigate around potential FFP sanctions.

All the while, two of their best players have been linked with moves away from the club, as PSG is hovering over Bruno Guimarães while Kieran Trippier may be close to a dream move to Bayern Munich.

Another key player could be leaving St. James’s park this winter, except, in this case, it seems like the Magpies are the ones who are interested in parting ways with the individual – at the right price, of course.

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle rejected a loan offer from LaLiga’s Champions League regulars Atlético Madrid for Callum Wilson, but they are reportedly willing to sell the 31-year-old striker outright for the appropriate price.

Callum Wilson won’t be in Newcastle’s long-term plans

Under contract through the 2024/25 season, Wilson could be sold for around 15 million euros. Now is the time to sell, because after this summer, he could leave for free in the January 2025 transfer window.

Wilson is not a weekly starter for the Magpies, but he is still an important player with seven goals in seven starts and seven bench appearances. Alexander Isak is the main man up top for Newcastle, but Wilson still has a role to play.

Still, even though Wilson is useful and Newcastle could still use him in their pursuit of European football, now is the right time to sell the veteran goal-scorer. He’s not a star player, he doesn’t have future upside, and he can’t be sold after this year.

Newcastle could use that money to invest in younger players, and they’ve had plenty of success with their recruitment team on that end, as evidenced by Anthony Gordon’s breakout this season as a legitimate Team of the Season player.
