The biggest priority on the summer transfer market for Tottenham should be upgrading a midfield that isn’t quite ready to stand with the other Champions League contenders – and the big clubs lurking behind them in the table.
Tottenham were close to qualifying for the Champions League next season, but they ultimately came up short against one of the fastest-rising sides in European football, Aston Villa.
There should be a lot of optimism surrounding Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou, but Spurs fans have seen this play out so many times where a manager comes in, gets early results, and then fades because he isn’t backed in the transfer market.
Tottenham have wisely been eyeing Rennes sensation Desire Doue as a top midfield transfer target this summer, alongside Europa League hero Ederson of Atalanta.
The problem with Doue is that a true European giant is gunning hard after him, and that club is one familiar with doing business with Tottenham, Bayern Munich.
According to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Harry Kane’s new club made a transfer offer to Rennes for Doue that was rejected, but they are going to try to make another offer.
For Tottenham, the most concerning part of the report is the assertion that Bayern Munich view Doue as a bigger transfer priority than RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, who has previously been viewed as their top midfield target.
Per Aouna, Bayern are even hoping to complete the operation for Doue within two weeks, which means Tottenham are going to have to get their act together if they want to sign the Frenchman.
Doue is a transfer target well worth going all-in for. The 19-year-old impressed as a rotational player for Rennes in the 2022/23 season before breaking out as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1 last year.
He scored 4 goals with 4 assists and averaged nearly 4 combined dribbles completed and fouls drawn per game. Those per-game averages don’t account for the fact that his per-90 numbers are significantly higher, since 14 of his 31 appearances were off the bench.
Doue is ready to take that next step towards stardom and would be the all-impact, young midfielder Tottenham should seemingly be desperate for.
The question is, do they have the stones to match Champions League semifinalist Bayern Munich’s clout?
