Micah Richards defended himself as a slip of the tongue sent his CBS Sports colleagues into fits of laughter.
The Manchester City cult hero was working in his usual role as a pundit for the broadcaster on Wednesday night’s Champions League clashes, with the Citizens, Inter Milan, Celtic and Paris Saint-Germain all in action.
And ahead of the round of fixtures across the continent, the CBS panel discussed David Beckham’s surprise studio appearance the previous evening.
Manchester United legend Beckham gatecrashed the TV studio to promote his new Champions League show – much to the delight of Richards, who was delighted to meet him.
He later gifted each of the panel a present, with host Kate Abdo, now known as Kate Scott following her marriage, receiving a signed retro Red Devils shirt and a congratulation for tying the knot.
Meanwhile Richards, Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher were presented with individual pots of honey.
The trio were given different flavours, with Richards’ jar named ‘DB’s Sticky Stuff’ – much to the amusement of the panel.
And on Wednesday night, the ex-Citizens defender was still buzzing about meeting the England legend, bringing up the gift he received, which his colleagues had forgotten.
Richards proudly stated, ‘I got his sticky stuff’, sparking shocked reactions and bewildered looks.
Before quickly pointing out, ‘The honey, Jamie,’ as he reacted to a puzzled look from Carragher, while Henry hid his face behind a sheet of paper and Scott burst into laughter.
Richards continued telling everyone it was the honey he was referring to.
“What is wrong with your minds? It says on the honey, ‘David Beckham’s Sticky Stuff.'”
Carragher then quipped, ‘Lucky boy,’ with Richards then joining in on the fun.
Scott then quickly ushered away to Beckham’s former teammate, Peter Schmeichel, at the Etihad to get his thoughts previewing City’s clash against Inter Milan.
But unluckily for Richards, he too was taken aback by his one-liner, covering his face as he looked away from the camera to spark more laughter from the panel.
Schmeichel, who won the treble at United alongside Beckham in 1999, then joked: “I can’t be watching this!”
Henry seemed to also enjoy himself more than the previous evening when he was involved in a heated discussion with colleague Mike Grella over the state of Major League Soccer in America.
Football fans were loving the segment, as one X user said: “TV gold. Everyday is awesome. Love this group.”
Another messaged: “I’ve been laughing at this video for solid 5 mins now.”
A third added: “This show should be Emmy nominated.”
At least Beckham knows what that feels like having won an Emmy for his Netflix documentary.
However, he may have been more concerned at the fact his Inter Miami side gave up a late equaliser in their MLS clash on Wednesday night.
Lionel Messi started on the bench in the 2-2 draw with Atlanta United. The result, though, has not hugely impacted Miami’s standing as they are ten points ahead of FC Cincinnati at the top of the Eastern Conference table.
