Undoubtedly, virtually everyone will agree that the current situation in the country in the area of tertiary education is very worrisome.
Hopes were raised prior to Monday, August 29, 2022; in fact many felt the long strike embarked upon by the Academic staff union of universities would be called off! However, to our surprise, there was an extension of the industrial action! This news didn’t sit well with many as they felt the strike is long overdue and lecturer ought to have returned to the classroom by now.
Meanwhile, the industrial action has resulted to so many issues (multiplier effect). For instance, so many students who intended to further their studies abroad cannot do that as majority cannot not process their transcript. Also, so many students who were just few months away from their 30’s could not qualify to participate in the National youth service corps programme; meanwhile, this is a scheme many graduates harness to stand on their feet through business or before job opportunities present themselves.
The industrial action has also resulted in the fold-up of businesses that depend on the student population in order to thrive; many have been rendered penniless and useless. The emotional trauma this has also caused is second to non to both students and lecturer.
Now, with the current state of things regarding tertiary education in Nigeria, is there hope for the children of the common man when it comes to acquisition of knowledge? What is your view an opinion on this? Let’s discuss in the comment section.
