Regrettably a lot of people are going to be disappointed by the outcome of the 2023 elections. Whoever wins is either going to have some insurmountable hurdles to scale or is going to push us further down the same dark and depressing path. The simple truth is that in order to get any reprieve or salvation we will have to come to terms with what we as people and a nation have become. A country that has turned out to be a a place where the lives and the living of its citizens are at risk.
People should not have to turn to fraud and corruption to become wealthy. People should not be forced to be content with poverty and penury. People should not have to let moneyed people lie on top of them to have enough money to make ends meet. People should not have to leave the country to feel safe, have three square meals or enjoy basic amenities. People should not be electing politicians who turn around and enrich themselves while doing nothing to serve and support people who voted for them.
I’m not saying that places abroad are paradise or nirvana. They don’t have any special values that make them superior. We have learned the hard way that the streets abroad are not paved with gold. There is uproar and upheaval in even the richest nations right now. The difference is that those places prioritise providing their people with a basic quality of life. No matter what other problems there are people do not wake up worrying about the basics a society should provide. That may not be perfect but it’s a starting point for most people.
People will have to find a way to pick themselves up after the 2023 elections. It stands to reason they may as well start now. While some will be holding their heads in anguish, others will readying themselves to continue plundering whatever little is left of the national resources. Hopefully the 2023 will go down as the point in which many Nigerians had enough and went to the polls to express their dissatisfaction. The politicians need to know that the people are gathering themselves to bring about their day of reckoning. Whatever the result might be if ever there was a time to exercise your ‘right to vote’ now is that time!
Of course the headline says it all, although this largely depend on whoever wins the election but Nigeria has gone down so much that it will take many years for the damages done by past government to be repaired and the fact that peoples expectations are very high and they are at the same impatient, i don’t see the next government solving the problems of Naija.
