Telegram Stands Firm On EU Compliance, Denies Platform Misuse Blame

Telegram’s Pavel Durov finds himself at the center of a huge legal or political storm following his recent arrest in France. He was detained at Le Bourget airport near Paris after landing on a private jet from Azerbaijan.  Shrouded in secrecy, the arrest has raised alarms in Russia and the tech world, with high-profile figures like Elon Musk expressing concern over the implications for free speech in Europe.

The French cybersecurity and anti-fraud police units are reportedly leading an investigation into allegations that Telegram has failed to adequately monitor content on its platform, allowing a range of illegal activities to flourish. This investigation has spotlighted the Digital Services Act, a European Union regulation aimed at holding tech platforms accountable for content moderation.

Telegram Defends Its Content Moderation Policies

The Telegram company, in light of the arrest, has released a statement reaffirming its policy of acting within the European Union’s laws, especially the DSA. The firm also emphasized that its moderation practices are in line with industry standards and are constantly improving.

Telegram, on the other hand, defended itself against the accusations of misuse of the platform saying that it is unjust to blame the platform or its owner, Pavel Durov for the actions of its users. The statement also indicated that Durov, who has been traveling around Europe all the time, has “nothing to hide.”

Telegram informed almost one billion users around the globe that it is still a secure means of communication and a trustworthy source of information, and it hopes for a quick solution to the platform’s recent problems.

Durov’s arrest caused a strong reaction among the population of Russia, where the messaging app is widespread, particularly in connection with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev echoed this sentiment that Durov’s mistake was his leaving Russia for exile in 2014 and registering the Telegram app abroad.

Having almost a billion users worldwide, Telegram has grown into one of the significant global media sharing platforms for news and information sharing with few involving Russia and Ukraine matters. However, despite its widespread use in different areas of the world, it has recently come under scrutiny due to concerns over security as well as privacy.
