Student killed in clash with police as violent protest spread in Senegal

By Ochogwu Sunday

The move by Senegal’s President, Macky Sall to postpone the country’s presidential elections has continued to generate violent protests across the West African nation.

DAILY POST reports that President Macky Sall had last week, unilaterally postponed presidential elections by several months.

The postponement came weeks before the planned date of the polls earlier scheduled for February 25 2023.

The president argued that the move was necessary to resolve a dispute over the eligibility of presidential candidates vying for the country’s top job.

The development had sparked violent protests as opponents tackled the president, accusing him of sabotaging democracy.

On Friday, a student died in clashes with police in the northern city of Saint-Louis.

The death of the student in Saint-Louis was reported by Khalifa Sall in a post on social media.

“The hearts of all democrats bleed at this outburst of clashes provoked by the unjustified halting of the electoral process,” he said.
