Samsung Holds Onto Its Crown, Manages To Sell More Phones

Samsung has managed to hold onto its crown in the global smartphone market. Despite rising competition from Apple and Chinese brands, the South Korean firm has sold more phones than last year and ranked first.

Samsung was the world’s biggest smartphone brand in Q2 2024

According to a report from market research firm IDC, Samsung was the biggest smartphone brand in the world in terms of shipments. The South Korean firm shipped 53.9 million smartphones in the second quarter (April to June) of 2024, capturing 18.9% of the market. Its shipments grew 0.7% compared to the second quarter of last year.

The Galaxy S24 series sold pretty well, and Samsung hopes that its new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6, will do well during the pre-order period.

Apple ranked second in the list after shipping 45.2 million iPhones and capturing 15.8% of the global smartphone market. Its shipments increased by 1.5% compared to the same period last year. While the company outpaced Samsung in the third quarter of last year, it could not continue its dream run.

Xiaomi was the world’s third-biggest smartphone brand during the same period. The Chinese firm shipped 42.3 million smartphones and managed to capture a 14.8% market share. That is a serious uptick of 27.4% in terms of shipments compared to last year’s figures.

Vivo, too, did pretty well to improve its shipments and market share. It shipped 25.9 million smartphones and captured 9.1% of the market. That is a 21.9% improvement compared to the second quarter of last year.
