The Paris Saint-Germain forward has represented Argentina at four World Cups, with the tournament in Qatar being his fifth.
But the 35-year-old has now made it clear he will not be playing on until the next edition of the competition, which takes place in the United States, Mexico and Canada. He would be 39 by the end of that competition, which will take place in summer 2024.
He told ESPN: “I am counting down the days until the World Cup, the truth is yes, there is a bit of nerves because we can’t wait to play. On the other hand, there is always a certain tension ahead of the tournament.”
When asked whether it will be his last World Cup, he replied: “Yes, it will be.”
Yeah, it will definitely be his last. Age is no longer on his side. I wish he can win it this time because it is the only silverware he has never won.
