Police keep mum as robbers kill Ogun poly student, injure nine

Suspected armed robbers were said to have reportedly attacked students of the Gateway Polytechnic, Sapaade, Ogun State, who live around Larufi area, Ode Remo, killing one and shooting nine others.

A resident of the area who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that the students even protested at the palace of the traditional ruler of the town, the Alaye of Ode Remo, Oba Amidu Oso, early Saturday morning to register their grievances.

The source said, “Yes, I heard that the robbers attacked the students and that while some of them were shot, one of them was killed. The students even held a peaceful protest this morning to show their grievances. I learned that they marched to the palace of Alaye Ode Remo to report the attack.”

One of the students told our correspondent that the gun-wielding hoodlums invaded the students’ hotels around 3 pm and unleashed terror on them.

The source added that the attack which took place in the Larufi area of Ode leaving one dead and nine others injured including a landlord.

In some of the viral clips of the attack, our correspondent observed shattered doors, broken windows, and walls riddled with bullet holes.

It was gathered that the robbers used heavy stones to break some windows to force their way into the hotels.

“I heard a gunshot around 3 am and when I woke up this morning, I was told they shot nine students and one landlord. They were taken to the hospital, but one died. They stole a car to escape.”

A senior lecturer at the polytechnic confirmed the attack saying six students were shot of which one died.

“According to the story I heard, the guy that was shot (dead) is not our student, he graduated last session hopefully expecting to come back for his HND next session,” the lecturer said.

This latest attack is coming barely a week after the students of the polytechnic protested the alleged robbery and rape of female students of the polytechnic by some night marauders.

It was gathered that students living in the adjoining communities of the polytechnic like Ode Remo, Ipara, and Isara have had a bitter taste of these robbery attacks over the last month.

Following the students’ protest last week on Tuesday, the management shut down the institution for three days to restore sanity to the polytechnic.

When contacted for a reaction, the spokesperson of the state police command, Omolola Odutola said that she was still waiting for full information on the incident.
