Organised labour in Rivers directs affiliate unions to withdraw services Nov 14

By Ifunanya Obeme-Ndukwe

The organised labour in Rivers State has said it will “strictly abide” by the decisions reached at the joint National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday in Abuja.

NLC and TUC, in a joint statement, said they had mandated their affiliate unions to mobilise their members to shut down every working environment, both in the public and private sectors, starting on Tuesday.

A statement made available to newsmen and signed by the state chairperson of NLC, Alex Agwanwor, and his TUC counterpart, Ikechukwu Onyefuru, said after reviewing the level of the federal government’s response to a number of demands, including the failure to explore the principle of social dialogue in resolving trade disputes, the national secretariat of both congresses on Monday had directed all affiliates at the state level to mobilise their members to withdraw their services from Tuesday, November 14, 2023, to press home labour’s demands for a better working environment.

Organised labour in Rivers State said a task force to monitor the compliance of all unions is also in force and reminded workers that “injury to one is an injury to all.”

The statement partly reads: “Sequel to the joint decision of the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) held on the 7th of November, 2023, declaring a nationwide industrial action with effect from Tuesday, 14 November 2023.”
