“Oppenheimer” Leads 2024 Oscar Nominations

Vanessa Obioha

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” maintains its award season dominance, securing an impressive 13 Oscar nominations. Nolan himself received nods for Best Picture and Best Director, while the talented cast, including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt earned recognition in the categories of Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

Following it closely is Yorgos Lanthimos “Poor Things” with 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Emma Stone.

Martin Scorsese’s historical film about the murders committed against the Osage Nation in the 1920s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fetched 10 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Lily Gladstone.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” earned eight nominations including a first Oscar nomination for America Ferrera in Best Supporting Actress and Ryan Gosling who played Ken in Best Supporting Actor.

Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” also made an impression, fetching nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor for Bradley Cooper.

This year’s International Feature Film category notably lacks representation from African cinema. Despite Nigeria’s submission of C.J. Obasi’s “Mami Wata,” the film didn’t secure a spot on the shortlist. The selected nominees hail from Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The 96th Academy Awards comprises films released between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. Jimmy Kimmel will host the awards on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
