They’re the Igbo and Yoruba terms respectively for malevolent spirits who take the form of children that die and are reborn to the same mother.

I wonder if these beliefs were purely religious in origin or if they were also used to explain the high rates of infant mortality in the region.

How did families cope with the advent of Christianity/Islam which led them to agree that their dead children were actually human beings and not spirits?
