As part of efforts to combat the increasing effects of climate change and ensure a sustainable environment, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has launched a tree-planting campaign in Zamfara state.
The exercise was flagged-off at the premises of Government Girls Day Secondary School (GGDSS), Bungudu in Bungudu local government area on Friday.
In his remarks, the State Coordinator NYSC for Zamfara, Malam Muhammad Lawan Ahmed, stated that the initiative was part of a nationwide drive by the NYSC to protect the environment.
He disclosed that trees provided a lot of benefits to society; hence the need to encourage the planting of more trees for the sake of future generations.
“The primary goal of the NYSC is to touch lives, especially at the grassroots. The launch of this tree-planting exercise in Bungudu is therefore a significant step in that direction,” he said.
Giving his royal blessings, the Emir of Bungudu, Alhaji Hassan Attahiru, thanked the NYSC for the initiative which he said would protect the community from desert encroachment as well as harmful winds.
According to the monarch, tree-planting will not only be beneficial to the people, but the unborn generations.
Earlier, the NYSC coordinator and his team had paid homage to the Emir of Bungudu at his palace where he officially introduced himself and solicited continuous support of the Emirate in the welfare and security of corps members.
Responding, the Emir of Bungudu recalled his participation in the scheme in 1984 in Ogun state, disclosing that as a corps member, he only travelled out of his state of deployment once.
