The Nigerian government has said financial constraints were the reason for the delay of the Port Harcourt-Aba Standard Gauge rail project aimed at boosting the country’s economy.
The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, recently made this known to journalists in Rivers State during an inspection of the project.
Alkali stated that the government was addressing financial issues related to the project’s award.
According to him, the previous administration awarded the project, and upon assuming office, the current administration resolved financing matters before starting the project, emphasising the importance of having all financial arrangements in place before commencing such a project.
He assured Nigerians that the project would commence promptly once the financial aspect is handled.
Alkali directed the contractor to connect the Port Harcourt rail to both the Port Harcourt port and the Onne port as part of the project’s implementation.
