I think it’s timely to remind everyone that Nigeria has 250 ethnic groups and 500+ dialects.
The “big” three groups is a colonial rhetoric and has aided in the oppression and erasure of other groups. Coming from the “big three” myself , I’ve seen other groups being pressured to assimilate into one of the big three to guarantee protection/prosperity.
However, this is leading to a loss of language and culture and very soon we will actually have only 3 ethnic groups with the way we’re going. Which is a big disservice to all of Us. The languages are dying.
If you want to learn more about Nigerian culture it doesn’t have to be Igbo or Yoruba or Hausa. It could be Efik, Tiv, Ibibio, Nupe, Gwari , Urhobo etc. These groups have equally interesting and captivating food , culture and language.
Let’s talk about something you like about Ethnic groups that AREN’T the three .
I’ll go first: I like Edo peoples dressing . I like the beads, they are very heavy and denote wealth. I like the way they use them as head gear for the women
