New App Launching Alongside iOS 18 This Fall

Every so often, Apple adds a brand new app to its suite of first-party software for the iPhone. It sounds like the latest addition will make its debut next week. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple will show off the new Passwords app at WWDC 2024 ahead of the app’s debut in the iOS 18, iPadOS18, and macOS 15 software updates later this fall.

Gurman claims that Apple’s new Passwords app will be powered by the iCloud Keychain, which autofills usernames, passwords, credit card details, and more across different apps and devices. Currently, the only way to access this functionality is either by navigating to it within the Settings app or by logging into an app or website.

As Gurman notes, spinning this feature off into its own standalone app encourages Apple users to be more mindful of their digital security, but it also puts the company in direct competition with developers of third-party password managers. That includes the likes of 1Password, LastPass, NordPass, Bitwarden, and Dashlane.

Apple’s Passwords app will reportedly show a list of logins across platforms and separate them into different categories. These categories include accounts, WiFi networks, and Passkeys. The data can be autofilled when visiting apps and website as well.

In addition to working on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, the Passwords app will be reportedly available on Vision Pro spatial computers and Windows PCs. You can use it as an authentication app to log in to your services and it will also support verification codes.

With every new leak, it’s clear that iOS 18 is shaping up to be a major upgrade from Apple.
