The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Educational Fund (UNICEF), has conducted a comprehensive hazard risk analysis across Nigeria.
A statement issued by the NEMA media office in Abuja Wednesday said the initiative was aimed at identifying and bolstering measures to address common disasters in various regions of the country.
The statement added that NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, and UNICEF’s Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Cristian Munduate, reviewed the progress of the risk analysis during a visit to NEMA’s headquarters in Abuja.
Hajia Umar expressed her appreciation for UNICEF’s ongoing support and emphasised the necessity of building the capacity of grassroots disaster managers in the states.
She highlighted the importance of equipping local communities to handle emergencies independently before additional support arrives.
“We need to ensure that after the series of workshops being held in all geo-political zones, a national validation and launch of the hazard risk analysis will take place in Abuja to complete this exercise,” she said.
She acknowledged UNICEF’s decade-long support to NEMA, particularly in developing hazard risk analyses addressing flooding, epidemics, and armed conflict.
On her part, Ms. Munduate reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to supporting NEMA by developing training modules for NEMA staff, State Emergency Management Agencies, and other sub-national stakeholders.
