Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration: A Comprehensive Overview of Achievements and Legacy

The Presidency has released a 90-page fact sheet chronicling the high points of the Muhammadu Buhari-led government as it winds down on May 29, 2023.

The fact sheet highlights the achievements of the administration in areas such as security, economy, anti-corruption, infrastructure, legislative matters, foreign affairs, sports, youth development, and many others. The fact sheet also highlights the significant progress made in terms of infrastructural development, power, roads, healthcare, housing, oil and gas, and digital economy.

According to Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the fact sheet documented the 37 bills signed into law, 12 executive orders, several infrastructure projects, bilateral agreements, fiscal reforms, and the appointment/election of eminent Nigerians into the leadership of several global organisations. The statement, titled ‘Buhari’s footprint on the sands of time’, indicated that the President had made a salutary impact on nearly all sectors of the national landscape.

In the area of infrastructure, the fact sheet noted that the administration had constructed over 961km stretch of rail lines crisscrossing the nation. It also highlighted other infrastructural gains, including power, roads, healthcare, housing, oil and gas, and digital economy. The launch of a new national 5G policy in 2021 and the successful licensing of two private companies to rollout 5G nationally were also documented, and the fact sheet revealed that Nigeria’s 5G spectrum auction had generated $547m in licence fees.

The Buhari-led government has also struck profitable ties and signed various MoUs across infrastructural, security, economy, and humanitarian lines with foreign entities such as the United Nations, China, Saudi Arabia, United Arabs Emirates, Morocco, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Germany, among others.

The fact sheet also highlighted the administration’s instrumental role in the appointment of several Nigerians as heads of various global organisations, including Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (first African and first woman to hold the position, elected 2021), Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, Benedict Oramah, President of African Export-Import Bank, and Mohammad Barkindo, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, among others.
