Aiyeobasan Tosin Elijah, known as frettic in the music scene, stated that the way gospel music is made in Nigeria has evolved. Musicians now pay more attention to the melody rather than the lyrics.
Frettic highlighted that while gospel songs were packed with Bible verses, whereas today’s artists seem to care more about the melody than the song’s meaning.
The CEO of T-Fretque Productions shared his thoughts on the changing landscape of gospel music production. He observed that melody has gained more focus than lyrics lately, yet producers are still using influences from different genres to enhance the music.
He said: “Unfortunately, melody has overtaken lyrics. Hitherto, gospel songs were heavily laced with Bible verses; these days, the melody is what sells more.”
Frettic noted that both the gospel and secular music industries in Nigeria have their own challenges and ways to measure success.
“Success is relative. Gospel music is becoming a great pathway leading people to Christ—this is success for the genre, whereas secular music has become more lucrative for its musicians than ever – this is success for that genre as well,” he said.
