Manchester United refused playing friendly match at Lagos stadium – Odegbami

By John Owen Nwachukwu

Former Super Eagles captain, Segun Odegbami, has revealed how Manchester United refused to play a friendly match at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, Nigeria.

He said the Red Devils turned down the proposal to face an unnamed team at the Stadium.

He said this while calling for the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, to be enhanced to take it to the next level.

He said the playing surfaces of pitches should be upgraded to natural grass, akin to those found in European football stadiums.

Odegbami said it was this reason Manchester United rejected playing at the stadium.

“I went to negotiate with Manchester United to come and play here when I was working with Globacom,” he said on Arise TV.

“Discussed everything, when they now asked where the game was going to be played, at Teslim Balogun Stadium, artificial turf, they would not come.

“We played against so many foreign teams in those days because it was grass. You need grass turfs and that’s partly why I went to AFCON.”
