Robert Maudsley is reportedly kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day
A serial killer from Liverpool will spend this Christmas locked in a cell alone, as he has done for the past 50 years. Dubbed Britain’s most dangerous serial killer, Robert Maudsley was born in Liverpool in 1953 and has been in jail since he was 21 after he murdered child molester John Farrell in 1974.
He gained the nickname Hannibal the Cannibal after claims he dug a spoon into the brain of one of his victims, an allegation he always denied. In 1977, he and another inmate murdered child molester David Francis at Broadmoor Hospital. After being transferred to HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire, he killed two more inmates.
Maudsley was convicted of three counts of murder and one count of manslaughter as a result. He was deemed too dangerous to be housed with other prisoners, leading to the construction of his current underground cell at Wakefield, where he is reportedly kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.
Despite his circumstances, like all other inmates, Maudsley will receive a full Christmas dinner. Prison documents reveal what will be on his menu, reports the Express. It includes:
- Vegan Schnitzels
- Vegetarian Peppered Veg Pie
- Sliced Turkey
- Half Roast Chicken
- Halal Half Roast Chicken
- Roast/New Potatoes
- Carrots & Sprouts
- Pigs in Blankets
- Christmas Pudding
- White Sauce Vegan Christmas Pudding
- White Sauce Apple
Maudsley will be spending December 25 alone in his underground glass cell. The room features bulletproof windows, a table and chair made from compressed cardboard, a toilet and sink bolted to the floor and a door with a small slot at the bottom for food delivery.
In 2021, his appeal to spend Christmas with other inmates was denied. According to reports by the Mirror, the killer had expressed a desire to want “to spend Christmas in the presence of other humans” but he was told no.
Speaking on Channel 5’s Evil Behind Bars, Maudsley’s nephew, Gavin said: “He’s asking to be on his own because he knows what can happen. Put him on a wing surrounded by rapists and paedophiles – I know this because he told us – he was going to kill as many paedophiles as he could. I’m not condoning what he did.”
Gavin added: “He did very bad things. “But he didn’t kill a child or woman. An innocent person didn’t go to work that day and never returned home. The people he killed were really bad people.”
