Lagos govt. urges collaboration with NGOs on national development

The Lagos state deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, says further collaboration between state governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will enhance successful delivery of good governance to the people.

Mr Hamzat made the remarks at the All Nigeria Rotary Convention, held on Thursday at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

The theme of the convention is: “Hope Without Borders”.

The deputy governor explained that the call for collaboration was imperative because the government lacked the entire resources needed for the social-economic needs of the citizenry.

According to him, while the government is building up a new Nigeria, reality dictates that other non-government actors must make necessary changes that support the drive of government.

“No government in the world possesses all the necessary capacity to fulfil the developmental needs of her people.

“Hence, in areas where government intervention is inadequate due to lack of sufficient resources, the NGOs have always tried to fill the gap by contributing towards the development of such areas,” he said.

Mr Hamzat further noted that due to lack of resources on the side of the government, some projects had to be prioritised over others thereby leaving some undone.

“The lacuna offers opportunities for groups like yours to intervene.”

The deputy governor, therefore, urged NGOs to engage in dialogues that would ensure that they reap the benefits of better coordinated and deliverable programmes.

Mr Hamzat commended the Rotarians for their services, and commitment to global peace.

“For more than 110 years, Rotarians have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects.

“From literacy and peace to water and health, you have always worked to better our world, and stay committed up till today,” he said.

In her remarks, Ifeyinwa Ejezie, district governor 2023-24, Rotary International District 9110, stated that the purpose of the club is to serve, which can be seen through different developmental projects embarked on across the country.

She highlighted the global polio eradication project as one of the major projects the Rotary foundation embarked upon in various communities across the country.

Mrs Ejezie said, “we live by our motto which is service above self.”

Earlier in his welcome address, chairman of the convention, Sen. Olanrewaju Solomon, stated that the convention provides the opportunity for Rotarians representing various walks of life to converge and enrich the Rotary journey.
