David Nwamini, the potential kidney donor involved in the organ trafficking case that led to the conviction of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has revealed that he wanted to remain and work in the UK as he feared for his safety in Nigeria.
In his impact statement, read out in court during the sentencing that saw Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and middleman Obinna Obeta jailed for their roles in the crime, David explained that he had been approached with an opportunity to work in the UK, which he had always dreamed of but never thought would come true.
Dr Obina Obeta had brought him to the UK under the pretence of offering him employment, without disclosing the true reason for the trip. David stated that had he known the purpose of the trip, he would have declined the offer, as his body was not for sale.
David expressed concerns about his safety if he were to return to Nigeria, citing fears of arrest or even assassination. He instead hoped to remain in the UK to work, pursue his education, and play football.
Despite being entitled to claim compensation from the culprits, David declined, stating that he did not want to associate with such people.
David also revealed that someone had visited his father in Nigeria and asked him to convince David to drop the case.
Donating a kidney is legal, but becomes criminal if it involves a reward, as was the case in this instance. The Ekweremadus were arrested on June 21 last year at Heathrow Airport.
