Juventus made it their transfer priority to upgrade their midfield this summer, and they have done exactly that, signing Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa and Nice’s Khephren Thuram.
Now, the Bianconeri have turned their attention to a top player within Serie A in Teun Koopmeiners, who has been their favored transfer target in midfield since the winter transfer period.
Koopmeiners is available for purchase this summer, and after closing the Thuram deal, Juve have turned their focus to signing th Dutchman from Bergamo.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus have become “increasingly confident” on a transfer for Koopmeiners being completed and will soon begin discussions with Atalanta.
Juve have apparently agreed to terms with Koopmeiners for quite some time now, so it is thus not a surprise at all to see Romano report that the 26-year-old only wants Juventus and is not listening to offers from other clubs.
Basically, Koopmeiners is Juve’s to lose, and he can be a pillar in midfield alongside the likes of Manuel Locatelli, Kenan Yildiz, Nicolo Fagioli, Douglas Luiz, and Khephren Thuram for years to come.
That looks like a much better midfield than the one buoyed by Weston McKennie and Adrien Rabiot in the past, which was a far cry from the standard set by the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba, and Claudio Marchisio at Italy’s most prestigious club.
Koopmeiners is coming off his second great season in Serie A in as many attempts, further enhancing his reputation as he helped Atalanta hoist the Europa League crown above the previously undefeated Bayer Leverkusen.
Individually, Koopmeiners excelled in midfield and showed top-class technical quality for Atalanta with 12 goals and 5 assists, averaging 1.8 key passes per contest while appeasing the Goddess of Bergamo in defense with 1.8 tackles per game in the Europa League and 1.1 per match in Italian competition.
