Jamie Oliver has delighted his foodie followers with a new, indulgent cinnamon bun recipe that’s been hailed as perfect for a ‘rainy day’. The renowned chef is celebrated for his homely, crowd-pleasing dishes and this latest creation is no exception.

Oliver has put an autumnal spin on the classic cinnamon bun by combining it with toffee apples, reports the Mirror. He explained: “It’s got loads of opportunity for you to flavour it in different ways, but my combo is toffee apple and cinnamon buns.”

Taking to Instagram, Jamie showcased his delectable dessert in a reel, suggesting it could also serve as a sharing treat. As he turned out the cinnamon buns from the pan, he described them as “crispy, gnarly, caramel-y”.

Sampling one himself, he exclaimed: “Oh my lord, that is insane.”

However, it wasn’t just about his own verdict; family approval was essential, and even his dog wasn’t left out of the teasing taste test. His Instagram post was captioned: “Toffee apple cinnamon buns…..to be honest I don’t even think I really need to say much more than that!!! Just watch the kids’ reaction to this bad boy.”

So, if you’re looking for some sweet inspiration, here’s what you’ll need to whip up Jamie Oliver’s delectable Toffee apple cinnamon buns.

Jamie Oliver’s Toffee apple cinnamon buns

Ingredients

  • 500g strong white bread flour , plus extra for dusting
  • 1 x 7g sachet of dried yeast
  • Oil, for greasing
  • 100g dried apple slices
  • 4 eating apples
  • 1 level tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste
  • 100g demerara sugar plus extra for dusting
  • 100g soft unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing

Method

Start by mixing the flour with a level teaspoon of sea salt in a large bowl, creating a well in the centre. In a separate jug, dissolve the yeast in 300ml of lukewarm water and let it sit for a few minutes.

Then, gradually pour the yeast mixture into the well, incorporating the flour from the edges to form a dough using a knife. Knead the dough on a flour-dusted surface for about ten minutes, or until it’s smooth and elastic. Jamie suggests picking up the dough and slapping it back down as a kneading technique.

Next, lightly oil a bowl, place the dough inside, and cover it with a clean, damp tea towel. Let the bowl rest in a warm spot for an hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.

While the dough is rising, finely chop the dried apple slices. Peel, quarter, core, and thinly slice the fresh apples. Then, in a bowl, combine all the apples with the cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar, giving them a good “scrunch” together.

Once the dough has risen, stretch it out on an oiled work surface into a 30cm x 50cm rectangle. Spread the soft butter evenly over the dough, top with the sugared apples and drizzle any remaining juices over it.

Start rolling the dough from the long side closest to you into a long sausage shape. Cut this into 12 equal pieces.

Generously butter the inside of a 28cm non-stick ovenproof frying pan and sprinkle a bit of sugar. Place the rolls in the pan, swirl side up, cover with a clean damp tea towel and leave in a warm place until they have doubled in size.

Preheat your oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Sprinkle a little more sugar on the buns and bake at the bottom of the oven for 30 minutes, or until they turn golden and sticky. Turn them out onto a board and serve.
