Viewers said it was obvious as the season started with a showfirst
The Masked Singer UK viewers were baffled as Giant Joel was unveiled on tonight’s programme. Fans were thrilled as the 2024 season of the ITV show got underway on Saturday.
Joel Dommett was back in the hosting seat as the first six contestants of the new season performed. The contest sees celebrities don extravagant costumes and perform a hit song.
Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and Mo Gilligan were back in the detective chairs to guess the voice behind the costume. Maya Jama made her debut as a judge and was thrilled to have joined the show.
However, before this season’s cast started their performances, the show needed to solve one other mystery. For the first time ever, The Masked Singer started with a character being unveiled as audiences got to see who was behind Giant Joel.
The mascot version of the host first appeared on the 2024 Christmas special and his identity was set to be revealed ahead of the show. However, viewers were confused when it seemed as though the celebrity behind the mask was given away on an Instagram posted shared by Virgin Media Television.
Ahead of the episode, the account shared a snap of Sir Mo Farah, alongside the judges with the caption: “The stage is set, the masks are on! The Masked Singer, TONIGHT at 7PM on Virgin Media Play & Virgin Media One Let the fun begin!”
A user user named Noelle spotted the gaffe and said: “Have you just given away who Giant Joel is? I did think it sounded like Mo Farah and then you post this.”
The legendary Olympian proved to be the man behind the mask when he took off the Giant Joel mask at the start of the episode. Judge Jonathan Ross knew he had guessed correctly as he described the voice as a ” dead giveaway”.
Viewers following the show on social media platform X were also certain they had guessed correctly. Peter said: “I’ll be absolutely shocked if Mo Farah ISN’T under the mask!”
Jon commented: “Giant Joel That’s so Mo Farah.” Kevin posted: “Pretty sure that the “Big Joel” is Mo Farrah.” Jessica posted: “I haven’t seen much of Giant Joe. The singing clip sounds like Mo Farah.”
