The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN has revealed it will shut down ports, terminals and jetties in compliance with organized labour’s Monday indefinite strike action.
The move follows the federal government’s failure to sign and implement a new minimum wage and reverse the April 3 electricity tariff hike.
Kennedy Ikemefuna, spokesman of MWUN, said in a statement on Saturday that the indefinite nationwide strike exercise will affect port operations.
”The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria has directed its members in all ports nationwide, jetties, terminals, oil and gas platforms to ensure total compliance to the strike exercise as directed by the NLC and TUC,” Ikemefuna said.
Recall that on Friday Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress issued a joint statement notifying its members to mobilize for an indefinite strike action on Monday.
Members of the National Union of Electricity Employees had also threatened to shut the country’s power sector in compliance with the strike action.
Similarly, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG commenced mobilization to down tools to join the indefinite strike.
