‘I’m being watched there too’ – Werder Bremen’s dual-national forward reveals Nigeria are keeping tabs on him

Werder Bremen forward Justin Njinmah has claimed that the Nigeria Football Federation are keeping tabs on him with a view to a potential call-up to the Super Eagles but also admitted that he is hoping for a call-up to Germany’s national team.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Njinmah can play for the Super Eagles because one of his parents hails from Nigeria.

He is coming off the back of a breakout 2023-2024 campaign, where he registered 8 goal involvements (6 goals, 2 assists) in twenty-four Bundesliga appearances.

The 23-year-old missed the backend of last season due to fitness issues but has returned to full training and took part in the first two friendly matches played by Werder Bremen in pre-season.

Njinmah was on the radar of the German Football Association before the 2024 European Championship but was omitted from the squad, possibly due to the injury he sustained.

Speaking to Kicker, via Fussballtransfers, he said: “So it was pretty clear to me that I had no chance. Nevertheless, I know that they have me on their radar.

“I haven’t had a discussion with anyone from the German staff yet, but of course that’s a big goal of mine that I hope I can achieve.”

Germany is not the only option for Njinmah, who also has Nigerian citizenship.

“I’m being watched there too, but I can’t make a decision until I get an invitation. Then I’d have to weigh things up really carefully,” he said.

The Nigeria Football Federation won the recruitment battle for central defenders Leon Balogun (Rangers), Kevin Akpoguma (TSG Hoffenheim) and Jordan Torunarigha (Gent), beating the DFB to their services.
