Barcelona fans want their club to go for a blockbuster transfer in 2024, but the economic reality still dictates more modest signings, unless if the club can somehow sell a handful of their transferable assets this summer.
Joan Laporta already recently made it clear that a blockbuster signing like Erling Haaland isn’t realistic in 2024, but that doesn’t mean the ambitious Barcelona president is eschewing the idea of signing a superstar altogether.
In fact, Diario Sport’s David Bernabeu Reverter, Laporta aims to sign Haaland in the summer 2026 transfer window, believing that by then, Barcelona can make such a transfer happen financially.
Furthermore, Laporta knows he will be up for reelection and would want a big signing to both boost his own status in the race and to put an exclamation mark on the opening of the new Spotify Camp Nou.
Haaland is enjoying his football with Manchester City, having chosen the club of his father in 2022 after Real Madrid made it clear they were going all in on Kylian Mbappé.
The Norwegian superstar broke the Premier League single-season goal-scoring record in 2022/23 and led City to both the league title and Champions League crown, with the latter being the club’s first.
Haaland has no reason to leave Manchester for the foreseeable future, even as LaLiga heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona continue to be linked to him.
Although many feel Haaland favors Madrid, since they are bringing in Endrick and (likely) Mbappé to join forwards Rodrygo Goes and Vinícius Júnior, there may not be enough mouths to feed for the ex-Dortmund man.
Therefore, if Haaland wants a new challenge in Spain and wants to join a historic power of European football, then Barcelona could have a leg up in that way, creating a money-making rivalry with Madrid’s Mbappé, invoking the old battles between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in El Clásico.
