When they start asking you for your bank details such as bvn, credit card details, and other sensitive information.

You can also detect a scammer when their conversations always center around money and how much you have. For instance, you are chatting with a girl about other interesting stuff but all she wants to talk about is her financial problems, her data is about to finish, her hair is due for re-fixing, she needs to buy airtime, foodstuff, and her mother is sick at the hospital. Some guys also stylishly request for money from ladies. If someone like that is chatting with you, run.

If someone chats with you posing as an official of your bank or something similar, ask for evidence of the person’s employment with the company. Do your due diligence by asking the company via their email address or social media handles if they know someone who bears the suspect’s name. Something like this happened to me some days ago.

I’m currently having issues with my bank account and I’ve been complaining persistently to the bank for weeks. Their attitude is indifferent. I got pissed and vented my anger on their fb page on thursday. Guess what? Someone sent me a friend request immediately after my rant on their fb page. I saw that the person’s profile picture is the bank’s logo, but nothing else was on the person’s profile. I accepted the request thinking that he was a staff that i could talk to about my problems. Only for the guy to tell me that he is an AI created to assist the bank’s customers with their bank account problems. This is a bank that already has its own popular AI chatbot that I use for all my banking transactions on whatsapp, and definitely, the name of this guy is not the same with the chatbot’s.

He asked for my account number and phone, but i didnt give him. Even the way he types the name of the bank is inaccurate and unprofessional. An AI built by a bank to attend to customers will never type that way. I knew right there and then that he was probably a fake staff trying to dupe me because of my desperate situation.

Watch out for inconsistency in such chats. If their communication is not professional and their English is bad, know that they are scammers. I also had a similar experience with one guy claiming to be a GOTV agent. Thank God i spotted his errors before it’s too late.

1. Request for a video call with them. If he or she declines, it might be a scam.

2. When they suddenly start requesting for money. It will likely be a scam.

3. If they request for your nudes. They might use it to blackmail you.
