Fire fighters tackle blaze after taxi catches fire in city centre

Firefighters rushed to the scene after a taxi caught fire in Liverpool city centre. Crews were called to Whitechapel in the city centre at 8.36pm on Saturday, September 14 as a fire had started in the car’s engine compartment.

The fire was extinguished with a hose reel jet and firefighters remained at the scene until 9.16pm as they monitored the temperature. Photographs sent to the ECHO show smoke billowing from the private hire vehicle, which sustained damage during the incident.


No injuries were reported and the road was not closed.

A Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson told the ECHO: “Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service attended an incident this evening at Whitechapel, Liverpool. A crew was alerted at 20.36 and one fire engine was on scene at 20.39.

“The crew arrived to find a taxi with a fire in the engine compartment, which was extinguished using a hose reel jet. Crews remained in attendance to hotspot and monitor temperature before leaving the scene at 21.16.”
