Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter rejects chance to become Ajax manager
Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter rebuffed the chance to become manager of Ajax for next season. The Englishman was in talks with the Amsterdam club over a return to management and was a top candidate.
As per Sky Sports, via Daily Mail, Potter turned down the opportunity to become Ajax manager when interim boss John completed his temporary stint after the end of the season. Potter earlier also turned down the opportunity to become Sweden’s manager.
Impressed by his status, Ajax made progressive talks and were keen to appoint him as their next manager, but the 49-year-old rejected the chance. The former Brighton & Hove Albion manager has been unemployed since he was sacked by the Blues.
Ever since Erik ten Hag left the Dutch team, they have been enduring poor seasons. They currently sit in sixth place in the Eredivisie, and their recent 6-0 defeat to Feyenoord further highlighted the club’s turmoil.
Potter, known for his pragmatic approach, made Brighton one of the dominant sides before his work was acknowledged by Chelsea, and they later hired him.
However, the former Seagulls head coach enjoyed a short spell of success before things went haywire and results started to plummet. With poor results and growing frustration from fans, the Englishman was ultimately fired, and since then, he has been without a club.
Given that he is a brilliant and savvy manager who turned Brighton into a competitive force, Ajax would have had a perfect opportunity to salvage his managerial career. He is a shrewd manager, and we saw how brilliantly he did right away at Chelsea. However, his standing there was damaged by our board recruitment procedure and numerous signings that caused the squad to swell.
