EPL: Three referees punished following penalty controversy in Man Utd vs Wolves

By Ifreke Inyang

The Premier League has dropped referee Simon Hooper, video assistant ref Michael Sailsbury and assistant VAR Richard West from this weekend’s fixtures.

This follows a penalty controversy during Monday night’s game between Manchester United and Wolves.
United won 1-0 thanks to Raphael Varane’s second-half goal.

However, they should have conceded a late penalty after Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic and Craig Dawson in the final minute of injury time.

Replays showed that Onana missed the ball entirely, before making contact with the two Wolves players.

Hooper decided on the pitch that it was not a penalty and the VAR check also agreed with him.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the defeat, O’Neil revealed that Jon Moss, manager of the Premier League’s elite group of officials, had admitted that the visitors should have been awarded a spot kick.
