Manchester United are ready to make a u-turn on Mason Greenwood’s impending return to the squad following a public backlash caused by leaked reports.
The Red Devils had laid the groundwork for Greenwood’s first-team squad reintegration.
But The Sun reports that United have been rocked by the reaction from fans, domestic violence charities and politicians, alike.
Greenwood has been suspended for the last 18 months over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.
The 21-year-old was facing charges including attempted rape and assault until the Crown Prosecution Service announced six months ago that the case had been discontinued.
United’s internal investigation had been close to reaching its conclusion with CEO Richard Arnold reportedly telling staff about his intention to confirm Greenwood’s return in the first week of August.
However, the response to details of their plan to confirm Greenwood’s comeback with some club staff even threatening to go on strike.
