Edo election, victory for democracy — IPCSL

The International Police Chaplain Sustainable Development and Law Enforcement, Inc (IPCSL) has released its preliminary report on the 2024 off-season governorship election in Edo State, Nigeria, describing it as “relatively peaceful, transparent, credible, and successful.”

“The election was a testament to the Nigerian people’s commitment to democracy,” said Ambassador Colonel Blessing A. Akinlosotu, IPCSL’s Africa Director. “We commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its efforts in ensuring a free and fair election.”

The election, held on September 21, saw 17 political parties vie for the top spot, with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressive Congress (APC), and Labour Party (LP) being the most visible.

IPCSL’s observation mission, led by Ambassador Akinlosotu, deployed 120 observers across the state’s 18 local government areas.

“The security operatives demonstrated their readiness for the poll, contributing to the calmness and orderliness experienced during the election,” Ambassador Akinlosotu noted.

The IPCSL report highlighted that adequate security presence contributed to the election’s calmness and orderliness. Election officials were well-trained, and materials were readily available. Minimal incidences of violence and complaints were reported.

However, the mission noted some issues, including heavy rainfall delaying voting in some areas, instances of fake news and vote buying, and destruction of voting materials in isolated cases.

“We urge INEC to address these issues and continue to interact with political parties and civil society organizations to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy,” Ambassador Akinlosotu said.

The IPCSL recommended reviewing electoral laws to address negative incidents, enhancing voter education and sensitization, and reviewing security strategies to avoid creating unnecessary tension.

“We salute the quality of the exchanges held with national actors and welcome the good collaboration between the various international missions,” Ambassador Akinlosotu added.

The IPCSL’s preliminary report reinforces hopes for Nigeria’s democratic growth and stability.
