Don’t overburden Nigerians with levies, tariffs – Delta Speaker to FG

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Dennis Guwor, has enjoined the federal government to make policies in the interest of the people by adopting healthy means of taxation without overburdening Nigerians.

Speaking on Thursday in Asaba during an interview, Guwor called for friendly and honest policies to boost foreign direct investment in Nigeria.

On the contribution of Delta State to an improved national economy, he described the first year in office of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as a testament of what is to come in the subsequent years.

He lauded Governor Oborevwori for consolidating on achievements of the immediate past administration in the state, particularly in the area of completing projects from the previous administration whilst awarding new projects across the state.

The Speaker dismissed notions that the governor’s intent is to develop only the Warri-Effurun axis of Delta State, stressing that developments are going on simultaneously in all parts of the state, including riverine areas.

According to Guwor, Warri is the business hub of Delta State and the governor saw the need to upgrade infrastructure in the locality.

“It is not about sectionalism, it is about enhancing development to that part of the state for overall economic growth, ” he affirmed.

He disclosed that the legislative arm has been able to carry out its oversight functions without difficulty, stating that relationship with the executive has been symbiotic.

While speaking on the hike in electricity tariff, Guwor revealed that the governor recently forwarded a bill to the House for a re-enactment of the power sector law in the state as part of government’s efforts to cushion the effects of poor electricity supply and hike in tariff on Deltans.

He asserted that high tariffs amidst other factors have led to the exodus of several multinationals and companies from the economy space of the country.
